Fundamentalisms

Fundamentalisms

Readers of this book will gain an overall sense of the nature of 'fundamentalism', the various concerns of fundamentalists, and the problems involved in studying fundamentalisms. Understanding the wider social and cultural implications of fundamentalist belief and practice will be a result of reading this book. Fundamentalisms will be of interest to all those concerned with the study of contemporary religion and culture. The most conspicuous form of religion to emerge during the 20th century is 'fundamentalism'. Whether one considers debates within faith communities concerning the correct interpretation of sacred writings, or religiously inspired political activism, or indeed some forms of international terrorism, fundamentalism seems to be a perennial religious tendency. Written from sociological, ethnographical, anthropological, missiological, and theological perspectives, these essays provide a source of reliable information and thoughtful reflection on contemporary manifestations of fundamentalism and fundamentalist-like trends.
Fundamentals For The 21st Century

Fundamentals For The 21st Century

In the early decades of the twentieth century, a prophetic series of books took a bold stand in the debate over the essential meaning of Christianity. With the publication of The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth, a new term entered religious language, fundamentalism, which then meant an adherence to the fundamental doctrines of biblical Christianity.Nearly a century later, biblical Christianity faces similiar challenges, both from within and without its ranks. The term fundamentalism and the faith it represents have been debased by cultural change, entrenched secularism, and theological confusion. As Edward E. Hindson observes,"From the beginning the ultimate issue has been wether historic Christian faith in a supernatual religion would be overpowered by Christians whose faith was centered in a naturalistic, humanistic philosophy. Fundamentalism affirms Christian belief and a distinctively Christian lifestyle in opposition to the surronding secular society...[The new liberal church] refuses to face the logical consequences of a secular world that has turned from its God. Instead of repenting of rebellion against God, the new century's religious are opting for a scientific mysticism that combines minimal Christianity with transcendentalism, spiritualism, transpersonal psychology, and even occultism (from the introduction)."This new landmark work, with contributions from thirty-four notable Bible scholars, pastors, and teachers, sets forth a distinctively biblical agenda for the Christian faith in the twenty-first century.
