The 12th edition of the Handbook of Denominations attempts to portray some of the depth and breadth of the major religious traditions in the United States. The religious bodies are grouped in family categories of Abrahamic religions, arranged chronologically: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The information for each group within these families was provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the doctrines, statistics, and histories of institutions. Such information is valuable for making sense of our culture and our neighbors, although much of the inner life of each denomination is not part of such a presentation. This handbook is a helpful resource for clergy, laity, journalists, and the curious who want to know more about the many facets of religious tradition in the United States today."For a one-volume text, I have found this work to be outstanding in its scope and depth of information! I have especially enjoyed observing the very interesting denominational changes reflected through the book's several updated editions. I began my study with your Seventh Edition in 1980." Rev. Paul Grustans, Bloomington, MN.

Why does it seem so hard to transmit the Catholic faith today? What are the obstacles that hinder modern men, women, and children from hearing and embracing the Gospel? Are science, technology, and mass media at odds with Christianity? Are new teaching methods helping to solve the crisis in catechesis or making matters worse? How can the Church do a better job of handing on her precious patrimony to subsequent generations? '' To address these provocative questions, some of the great churchmen of our times, including Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the man who would become Pope Benedict XVI, gathered in France in 1983 for two important conferences. '' Handing on the Faith in an Age of Disbelief brings together the four illuminating lectures presented at those meetings, along with commentaries by Pierre Eyt, Bernard Bro, O.P., Georges Bonnet, and Jacques Guillet, S.J. Also included is a candid interview with the then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger about the pressing problems associated with teaching the faith. '' "The fact that there can be long-lasting periods of decline in the Church, is, unfortunately, plain enough from history. Yet history also shows that the totality of the Church"which extends through the whole world and through all times, and is held together and embodied by the Petrine office"bears within itself the powers of regeneration, so that it rises again and again from the dust to proclaim the message of salvation." '' "Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Handing On The Faith In an Age of Disbelief '

Let's face it, hard as we try, none of us can avoid contact with difficult people in life. Some people just seem to savor unnecessary and unhealthy conflict; they don't seem to be happy unless they are driving those around them crazy. Dr. John Townsend, noted relationship author, helps us better understand what makes "button pushers" act the way they do and why they want to elicit a negative emotional response from us. He challenges the reader to take personal responsibility and stop responding to difficult people in ways that just don't work! He then offers a whole new repertoire of responses, including specific guidance on body language and verbal scripts, which will allow us to confront and negotiate with "crazy-makers" on a brand new level.
