  • New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 1

New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 1

In this volume a master of hagiography presents thirty-seven new Blesseds and five Saints beatified and canonized by Pope John Paul II. These are new faces, some of them our contemporaries, who followed Christ under circumstances that were completely different from those of the saints of earlier ages who had the privilege of living in a world that was still more or less whole. The short biographies each include an illustration of the saint, and part of the homily given by the Pope at the canonization or beatification. In this book you will meet men and women who come from eras of great conflict, who in a heroic way remained faithful to Christ and to His Church, and so have become, as Vatican II says, "companions of our human condition". When the prophet Elijah on his forty-day journey to Mount Horeb collapsed in exhaustion, an angel came to him and strengthened him. The Saints have the power and the duty to help us, to set us aright and teach us strategy for our battle with the powers of darkness. Let us get to know them, so that we can call on them by name. Illustrated "What a splendid and necessary compilation this is! Here surely is the richest and most lasting legacy of the Pontificate of John Paul II. Such a treasure trove of insight and inspiration about the extraordinary lives of so many otherwise hidden and heroic souls, whose witness to sanctity cries out for our admiration, yes, but even more, our emulation." • New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 2

New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church, Vol. 2

'In this second volume of New Saints and Blesseds of the Catholic Church are depicted the lives and deaths, the struggles and battles of those women and men who were raised to the honors of the altar by Pope John Paul II during the fours years from 1984 through 1987, in forty-nine beatification ceremonies and in seven canonization liturgies. ' Among them are Blesseds and Saints from a wide variety of countries, languages, ages and walks of life: lay people, religious, priests, and bishops, confessors and martyrs, including Edith Stein, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Titus Brandsma, Teresa of the Andes, and many more. All of them not only deserve reverence, but are worthy of imitation in their striving for perfection, in their fidelity to the Catholic faith and to the Church of Jesus Christ. ' The life of each one of these personages is portrayed briefly, occasionally in greater detail, followed by the homily which the Pope gave at the respective beatification or canonization ceremony. This papal address presents a very contemporary commentary on the life of the new Blessed or Saint. ' Anyone who reads these short biographies is edified and touched, moved to give thanks, that the Church, which today is so often reviled and criticized, is still in our days a “Mother and teacher, the Mother of Saints, and a guide to sanctity. Illustrated with many pictures .' 'Ferdinand Holb...ck, a German priest and renowned hagiographer, is the author of volume one in this series, and of Married Saints and Blesseds .'

  • New Slavemasters

    New Slavemasters

First, some disturbing facts: Inner-city families often look like puzzles with pieces missing--7 out of 10 African-American children are born outside an intact family. In the absence of caring families, kids seek adoption by gangs, pimps and drug dealers. Family relationships are torn apart by the new masters of drugs and violence. By age 10 or 11, most children have seen enough of their friends and family members die that they cannot imagine themselves living to the ripe old age of 21! Desperate for love and to fit in, young girls become pregnant and end up raising their children alone. When their children fail, grandparents raise their grandchildren, or older siblings try to raise younger siblings. One at a time, these issues alone cause serious wrinkles in the fabric of society--but they, themselves, are not the ultimate problem. There are forces at work to end the family, as we know it, perhaps even beginning with the African-American family, which has survived through faith in God and which has been instrumental in preserving the Christian faith in America as a whole.
