Reaching For The Invisible God

Reaching For The Invisible God

In the book Reaching for the Invisible God Philip Yancey steers clear of trite detours, inviting readers to travel through the most difficult parts of pursuing a relationship with the transcendent God. Making use of his wide experience and a rich well of stories, Yancey considers honestly the predicaments of human existence, that we are distracted with daily routines like work and school, we open up the computer more than we open our Bibles, and we seek success instead of God. We forget God and become guilty of worshipping the impossible while failing to believe in the possible--that the relationship of the grace God extends to us daily. In the Bible we can and will encounter God's loving and gracious personality. Without cliches, Yancey reminds us that doubt and difficulty, two seeming foes of friendship with God, can actually spur intimacy with him.
Reaching Heaven : Discovering The Cornestones Of Jesus Prayer Life

Reaching Heaven : Discovering The Cornestones Of Jesus Prayer Life

Jesus' disciples had been with Him for over two years when they asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." (Luke 11:1) At first glance this was a strange request. Their culture was immersed in prayer so they were accustomed to praying. But faults had crept into their prayer life--praying on the run, failing to intercede for others--just as faults creep into ours, and they wanted to relearn prayer from the Master. Jesus knew perfectly the heart and mind of God. He can show us what to pray for, when to pray and the kind of answers we can expect to receive.

Reaching Out : The Three Movements Of The Spiritual Life

Reaching Out : The Three Movements Of The Spiritual Life

With the clarity and depth characteristic of the classics, this spiritual bestseller lays out a perceptive and insightful plan for living a spiritual life and achieving the ultimate goal of that life-union with God.Nouwen views our spiritual "ascent" as evolving in three movements. The first, from loneliness to solitude, focuses on the spiritual life as it relates to the experience of our own selves. The second, from hostility to hospitality, deals with our spiritual life as a life for others. The final movement, from illusion to prayer, offers penetrating thoughts on the most mysterious relationship of all: our relationship to God. Throughout, Nouwen emphasizes that the more we understand (and not simply deny) our inner struggles, the more fully we will be able to embrace a prayerful and genuine life that is also open to others' needs.Reaching Out is a rich book to be read, reread, pondered, and shared with others. "it does not offer answers or solutions:" Nouwen cautions, "but is written in the conviction that the quest for an authentic Christian spirituality is worth the effort and the pain, since in the midst of this quest we can find signs offering hope, courage, and confidence".
