In 1977 a collection of essays appeared that quickly became a standard for studying the purpose and occasion of Romans. Now The Romans Debate: Revised and Expanded Edition is available in a newly designed and enlarged format. Besides the original essays, the new edition includes thirteen of the most cogent, recent articles on this subject; a comprehensive bibliography; and an index. This is not a volume for the "already decided." Spanning the spectrum of interpretation, these essays attempt to challenge opposing views, complement points of consensus, and above all contribute to our understanding of Paul's controversial letter to the Romans. In its own unique way, each of these articles compels the reader to return to the text and to listen anew to the message of Romans both for Paul's day and for ours.
Dr. Lloyd-Jones' exposition of Romans, the major work of his mid-week ministry in London, occupied him from 1955 until 1968. Throughout these years, no other event in the calendar of evangelicals was comparable to Friday night at Westminster Chapel. But the publication of such a massive series of sermons had no precedent in this century and there was therefore no promise of a consecutive series of volumes when his sermons from chapter 3 were printed in 1970. Since then, however, interest in this preaching through Paul's greatest Epistle has gripped a far larger number than those who first listened. With 9 volumes (from Romans chapter 1 to the end of 9) now issued, this present volume takes up the real starting point for the whole series. No New Testament Epistle is more foundational to the Christian faith than Romans, and no chapter in Romans more basic that its first chapter. To few chapters did Dr Lloyd-Jones give more thought or more emphasis. He viewed it as the supreme demonstration of the necessity for the gospel, the announcement of divine truths worthy of the attention of the whole world.
Christians have been brought, by faith in Christ, into the kingdom of God, but they are still citizens of an earthly kingdom. How does life in one kingdom connect with life in the other? Does obedience to God somehow exempt Christians from obedience to earthly rulers? And what of the vexed question of the relationship of the relationship of church and state?Insisting that these questions have been of more than theoretical interest throughout church history and remain so today, Dr. Lloyd-Jones examines the function of government, the Christian's attitude to war and revolution, the lordship of Christ over church and state, the Christian's relationship to the law of God, the meaning of loving one's neighbour, and many related topics. All these matters are viewed in the light of the transience of earthly life and the coming of Christ in judgment. The heavenly perspective presented here is calculated to correct over-anxiety about the kingdoms of this world and to promote readiness for the 'day' that has yet to dawn.
