  • Running On Empty

    Running On Empty

Until 15 years ago, Anderson was spinning his wheels in a frenetic attempt to bring others into a deep relationship with God through his work with the evangelical group Young Life, all the while allowing his busyness to sabotage any hope of enjoying his own relationship with God. An encounter with Brennan Manning (who contributes the foreword for this book) reignited Anderson's passion for God and rerouted his spiritual journey, a journey that provides the backdrop for this uneven book. Primarily a memoir, the book weaves in encouragement for others who are plagued by both a hectic life and a shallow view of God. It's highly readable, though repetitive in describing the obstacles to a genuinely satisfying and authentic spiritual life. But what the book suffers from most is a misleading subtitle: Contemplative Spirituality for Overachievers implies practical guidance, but there's little here that might help overachievers incorporate contemplative practices into their lifestyle. Anderson describes a few of those practices, but others, like the foundational practice of living in the moment, are mentioned only briefly, and anecdotally at that. Now executive director of Journey Resources and a spiritual director who trains others to provide spiritual direction, Anderson is in a prime position to write a more focused book that would live up to the promise of this book's subtitle. Let's hope he does. Copyright (C) Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Running Scared: Fear, Worry & the God of Rest

One of the haunting dilemmas of the human condition is that fear is an inescapable feature of earthly life. Every person who has lived on this earth has encountered fear. Tragically, for this reason our race for the good life finds us all too often Running Scared. In his new release, Running Scared, Edward T. Welch investigates the roots of fear in the human soul and the ramifications of living in the grips of anxiety, worry and dread. "Fear is natural to us," he explains. "We don't have to learn it." With characteristic clarity and insight, Welch explores the way in which fear progresses from childhood, through adolescence, and into adulthood. Fear, he shows us, is our travel companion from infancy to death. Scripture, however, which we trust as our guide in all the details of life, instructs us very simply: "Do not fear" In fact, one of the most often repeated directives of both the Old and the New Testaments is "Do not be afraid." Can life-altering fear be so easily dispelled? Edward Welch assures us that, though fear cannot be summarily dismissed, it can be controlled --- even conquered --- when we allow scripture to guide us to that peace that passes understanding. Through scripture, God leads us through the darkened landscape of an existence ruled by fear to emerge in the light of his love and care. In Running Scared, Welch has succeeded in giving us far more than merely another psychology textbook. Rather, he has provided us with a biblical guide to dealing with one of life's day-by-day struggles. "What began as a study of fear and danger," he explains, "has enlarged to include God, control, need, love and trust."

  • Rut Rot Or Revival

    Rut Rot Or Revival

Often quoted by Chuck Swindoll, Charles Stanley, Billy Graham and other great preacher's, A. W. Tozer's words are being heard and read by millions today--words like:Change is one of the ingredients of Christianity. If people could not change, the gospel would be absolutely meaningless... The fact that people can change is the only hope they have.Try what I call the pad and pencil method. This method is very simple and consists of getting on your knees with your Bible, a pad of paper and a pencil. Read the Bible then right down what is wrong.Somebody once said the man is made of dust and dust tends to settle. People tend to settle down and do the same things year in and year out, slowly going around in a circle. When this gets into religion, it is deadly and evil. The chapters in this book were originally preached as sermons at South Side Alliance Church in Chicago. Whether spoken or written, Tozer's words were designed to "promote personal heart religion" among God's people.le.
