At the beginning of the nineteenth century the village of Clapham in Surrey still enjoyed a sense of distance from the bustle of London. There the group of evangelicals who would come to be known as the Clapham Sect regularly gathered. William Wilberforce, leader of a long campaign against the slave trade, commiserated with the other inheritors of the fledgling British evangelical movement, now in its second, more politically and culturally savvy generation. Meanwhile, evangelicalism had also taken root in much harsher social and geographical landscapes, where it was witness to much more rough-edged expressions of Christian conviction. In the bleak industrial valleys of northern England, in the mining and fishing villages of Cornwall, and on the expanding American frontier, a period of intense revivalism was leading to the rapid expansion of Methodism and other forms of popular evangelicalism. It shaped a spirituality that emphasized the transience of this world and the reality of the Christian's true security in heaven. In The Expansion of Evangelicalism John Wolffe provides an authoritative account of evangelicalism from the 1790s to the 1840s. Making extensive use of primary sources, Wolffe skillfully balances British and American developments, and also discusses Canada, Australia, the West Indies and other regions. He covers aspects of the movement such as spirituality and worship; the place of evangelicalism in the lives of women, men and the family; and its broader social and political effects--giving particular attention to the question of slavery. Volume two in the acclaimed series A History of Evangelicalism, this richly detailed, compelling book will excite history buffs, students and professors, and any reader interested in the development of evangelicalism.

Rightly understood and rightly communicated, the Christian faith is one of great joy. It is an invitation to God’s kingdom, where tears are replaced by laughter and longing hearts find their purpose and their home. This is the heart of the gospel: God’s search to reclaim us and love us as his own. But have we truly grasped this? Those of us who have disdained Christianity as a religion of bigotry—have we repudiated the genuine article or merely demonstrated our own prejudice and ignorance? Those of us who are Christians—have we deeply apprehended the mission of Jesus, and do our ways and character faithfully reflect his beauty? From the nature of God, to the human condition, to the work of Jesus, to God’s coming kingdom, and all that lies between, how well do we understand the foundational truths of Christianity and their implications? The Faith is a book for our troubled times and for decades to come, for Christians and non-Christians alike. It is the most important book Chuck Colson and Harold Fickett have ever written: a thought-provoking, soul-searching, and powerful manifesto of the great, historical central truths of Christianity that have sustained believers through the centuries. Brought to immediacy with vivid, true stories, here is what Christianity is really about and why it is a religion of hope, redemption, and beauty.

Though every president of the United States has thought of himself as a Christian, some have denied some the central doctrines of orthodox Christianity. This book carefully examines each President’s religious beliefs and compares those beliefs to the doctrines of biblical Christianity. The book also discusses their conversion experiences (where applicable), examines how their religious beliefs affected their Presidency, examines their beliefs on God’s role in American history, and looks into pertinent historical controversies. It contains both new and long-forgotten facts about and statements by many of our Presidents. Recently discovered (or rediscovered) information leads to new or modified conclusions about the religious beliefs of Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Buchanan, and Nixon. The book uses original sources, such as letters and firsthand recollections, to offer one of the most comprehensive portrayals of the topic ever written. The seven previous books on the topic relied on anecdotes and widely available speeches and biographies to paint interesting but anecdotal histories. This book offers the definitive treatment of its topic, yet remains fascinating and readable. One chapter is devoted to the religious beliefs of each President; the average chapter is ten to twelve pages long. About the Author Daniel Mount began researching this topic during his years as a homeschooled student and continued research while earning my Bachelor’s degree in American History and Political Science. He has had published several articles and one previous book, City on a Hilltop: The Story of Contemporary Christian Music (self-published in 2005). Daniel lives in Mansfield, Ohio and is active in a non-denominational church, as well as in political circles.
Discover the open beliefs of liberal Barack Obama—and how he represents the changing face of religion in American politics. In The Faith of Barack Obama Stephen Mansfield presents an insightful portrait of the presidential candidate. Learn how his faith motivates him as a senator and leader in our nation. You'd have to live in a cave to have avoided hearing about Barack Obama's woes relating to his close relationship with the senior pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright. People question Senator Obama's ability to represent persons of all races when he attended for so long a church defined by anger toward white America. Fortunately, there is more to the senator's faith than this one issue. As early as 2004, he delivered a powerful speech to the Democratic National Convention, taking a stand for his faith: "We worship an awesome God in the Blue States." In The Faith of Barack Obama, Stephen Mansfield explores Obama's religious faith without political or ideological bias. His basic premise is this: If a man's faith is sincere, then it is the most important thing about him.
Since men and women in battle not only face the prospect of their own deaths but also must fashion a moral rationale for killing, the battlefield is often a place of tremendous religious transformation. Do men and women at war revert to the faith of their youth or do they gravitate to the spirituality around them? Do they lose all faith in the face of horror, or do they piece together an informal faith that simply gets them through the fight? Are they better warriors and do they experience less post-traumatic stress if they believe their war is righteous and that they are agents of good? These are the questions Stephen Mansfield addresses in The Faith of the American Soldier. The book opens with the core question which lies at the heart of the matter: what happens religiously to America's warriors when they go to battle, and what impact does this have on the nation's conduct of war? Mansfield surveys America's wars from a theological perspective in order to understand the theological framing and religious rationale for each, where they came from, and what effect they had on behavior on the battlefield. Mansfield examines the religious nature of the warrior ethic today. There is a new generation on the battlefield now, one raised with less religious training and less connection to history than any that has come before. Soldiers are left to their own religious choices to frame their moral perspectives on war, on killing, and on the possibility of death. Mansfield explores these choices through the lens of his deep respect for the military--he comes from a long line of U.S. Army officers--and from his background as a Ph.D. in American history, as well as his more than twenty years' experience as a pastor.
