Ecclesiastes Song Of Songs

Ecclesiastes Song Of Songs

The NIV Application Commentary Ecclesiastes/Song of Songs. Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs have always presented particular challenges to their readers, especially if those readers are seeking to understand them as part of Christian Scripture. Ecclesiastes regularly challenges the reader as to grammar and syntax. The interpretation even of words which occur frequently in the book is often unclear and a matter of dispute, partly because there is frequent word-play in the course of the argument. The argument is itself complex and sometimes puzzling and has often provoked the charge of inconsistency or outright self-contradiction. When considered in the larger context of the OT, Ecclesiastes stands out as an unusual book, whose connection with the main stream of biblical tradition seems tenuous. We find ourselves apparently reading about the meaninglessness of life and the certainty of death in a universe in which God is certainly present but is distant and somewhat uninvolved. When considered in the context of the NT, the dissonance between Ecclesiastes and its scriptural context seems even greater; for if there is one thing that we do not find in this book, it is the joy of resurrection. Perhaps this is one reason why Ecclesiastes is seldom read or preached on in modern churches. The Song of Songs (also known as the Song of Solomon) has been read, historically, by Christians, in two primary ways - as a text which concerns the love and sexual intimacy of human beings and as a text which uses the language of human love and intimacy to speak of something else - the relationship between Christ and the church. Christians have often felt that they must choose between these options - that a text about human love and sexual intimacy could not be at the same time a spiritual text. It is one of the challenges of reading the Song to explore how far this is necessarily true and how far Christian readers have been influenced in their reading more by Platonism and Gnosticism than by biblical thinking about the nature of the human being and of human sexuality. Another challenge is to discover whether the Song is really one "song" at all, or simply a haphazard collection of shorter poems cast together because of their common theme of love; and still another is to gain clarity on what, precisely, is the connection between the Song and Solomon.
Ecclesiastical Authority And Spiritual Power In Church Of First Three Centu

Ecclesiastical Authority And Spiritual Power In Church Of First Three Centu

The issue of authority in the church, what constitutes authority, and who has it, has been one of the foremost issues throughout church history, including the modern church. The practice of the early church and the writings of the New Testament are of primary importance for understanding the problem of authority. We can enhance our understanding further by taking into consideration the sociological phenomena surrounding any emergent social group that traverses a path from charismatic leadership to formal governing structures.Von Campenhausen's masterful blending of historical assessment with sociological analysis makes this work a fundamental resource for the study of the development of the early church and the writings of the New Testament.

Eclectic Almanac For The Faithful

Eclectic Almanac For The Faithful

For centuries, some Christian traditions have followed a calendar of events that commemorate the history of faith through the lives of its saints. While Protestants have been slow to adopt this practice, a growing number of Christians find it meaningful to consider our own heroes of the faith and the events that have shaped us as a people. W.Paul Jones offers an immensely engaging example of this practice. He celebrates such historic events as moon landings and civil rights marches and explores religious figures like Mother Teresa and John Wesley, as well as secular figures from Calileo to Sylvia Plath.
Eclipse of the Sun

Eclipse of the Sun

In this fast-paced, reflective novel, (the second in a trilogy following Strangers and Sojourners ) Michael O'Brien presents the dramatic tale of a family that finds itself in the path of a totalitarian government. Set in the near future, the story describes the rise of a police state in North America in which every level of society is infected with propaganda, confusion and disinformation. Few people are equipped to recognize what is happening because the culture of the Western world has been deformed by a widespread undermining of moral absolutes. Against this background, the Delaney family of Swiftcreek, British Columbia, is struck a severe blow when the father of the family, the editor of a small newspaper which dares to speak the truth, is arrested by the dreaded Office of Internal Security. His older children flee into the forest of the northern interior, accompanied by their great-grandfather and an elderly priest, Father Andrei. Their little brother Arrow also becomes a fugitive as the government seeks to remove any witnesses, and eradicate all evidence of its ultimate goals. As O'Brien draws together the several strands of the story into a frightening yet moving climax, he explores the heart of growing darkness in North America, examining events which have already occurred. The reader will take away from this disturbing book a number of urgent questions: Are we living in the decisive moment of history? How dire is our situation? Do we live in pessimistic dread, or a Christian realism founded on hope? This is a tale about the victory of the weak over the powerful, courage over terror, good over evil, and, above all, the triumph of love. "The horrors in O'Brien's novel are frightening not merely because of his suspense-charged, page-turning apocalyptic plot, but because the instruments of coersion he describes are already largely in place. Interweaving moments of profound consolation and ultimate spiritual hope, as in his scintillating Father Elijah , O'Brien is revealed as a novelist of penetrating spiritual insight and prophetic clarity." " David Lyle Jeffrey , Author, People of the Book "The sweet, lyrical and faithful voice of Michael O'Brien is perhaps the truest and finest in contemporary fiction. I searched for a very long time before finding a novel as vital as Father Elijah . I thought that such an achievement could not be repeated. It has with Eclipse of the Sun ." " Michael Coren , Author, Columnist, Radio Host Michael O'Brien , author, editor and artist, has written several books including the best-selling novels, Father Elijah and Strangers and Sojourners . O'Brien writes and lectures widely on the topic of faith and culture. His articles have appeared in numerous journals.
